Read about the one and only NEXT Dentist Career Design Conference on March 13th 2021 to help you explore non-traditional or non-clinical careers! If you’re like many of the dentists I know, you may have wondered what are some alternative careers for dentists. I’ve been searching for this answer for years. It seems to be the elusive question that no one in our industry can answer. Even now if you search this on Google, there is no clear cut answer about what options we have outside of clinical practice. The ADA has a list of different ideas, but even if...
Because my training in dentistry was so specific, I have no other skills. Have you thought that before? I have, and I hear that all the time from other dentists! I thought it for much of my career. This thinking kept me stuck for years. It made me believe that I had no creativity and no options. Over time, I learned that this belief wasn’t true at all. After working with a career coach, getting therapy, and doing a lot of personal development, one day it hit me like a ton of bricks! I suddenly realized the truth: Dentistry is...
If Covid-19 highlighted one thing, that is the need for easy access to support for our mental well-being. A few months ago I was lucky to connect with a new friend from across the globe. Kai is “an AI-powered, personal companion designed to help ease anxiety, depression, sleeping disorders and many other psychological stressors by integrating wellness tools, techniques and exercises according to the Acceptance Commitment Therapy ACT model.” Their mission is to make support for mental...

In January of 2018 I started a new series of interviews titled Celebrating New Beginnings. Each week I featured a dentist or hygienist who had an innovative dental career or made a career transition outside of the traditional roles in private practice. It was really fun to highlight how other dental professionals were finding career happiness. Life got in the way, and I had to shift gears for a bit, but now we are back! I often focus on dentist career changes, and today I’m excited to highlight a hygienist’s career change. Welcome my guest, Amy. Amy grew up in...

If you’ve invested so much of your time and energy to get into dentistry that you’re in it for life, think again. It’s scary to consider walking away from this career you’ve built, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. You can safely plan a career transition or modification before you feel too stuck. Sure, it’s still possible to diversify after you feel stuck, but why not get started early? There are many ways we can...

How much did you know about dentistry before you chose it as your forever career? If you’re like me, not much. Many of us interviewed a few dentists, spent a handful of afternoons shadowing them, or just found teeth interesting as patients. We chose dentistry based on a somewhat superficial impression of the work involved. You can see how easy it would be get into the career and then realize it’s totally wrong for us. Imagine if you did that with your romantic relationships. Imagine marrying someone after you’ve only met for coffee 5 times. It would be kind of...
Why does it always take a big shake-up in life to get our attention? We often go through life on auto-pilot, making decisions and taking actions that we think will give us the life we want. Over time we get so caught up in our routine, that we don’t even think about what our priorities are anymore. We wake up, go to the work we chose, often wishing it were Saturday. Once the day gets going, things might be fine, but how inspired and motivated are we, really? We try. We use the New Year, whether that’s in January or...
As humans, judgment is part of our inherent nature. We need judgment to protect ourselves from threats. As a species it is one of our strongest defense mechanisms. While it can help us in many ways, it can also create problems with relationships– especially our relationship with ourselves. While it’s necessary to discern between safety and danger, it doesn’t always serve us when we are not in danger. At a time when we are isolated and not even around other people, our judgment of others is out in full force. Take being outside, for example. While we have to be...
