Changing my approach and attitude about the new career search took the edge off. There was less pressure to get myself somewhere.
Then the opportunity I was looking for fell into my lap. I just didn’t know it yet. I’ll admit, sometimes I’m a little slow.
Here’s what happened:
One day my husband had received a call from an old chiropractor friend of his who he knew well and trusted a lot. He wanted to introduce Nick to a weight loss program he had successfully been using for himself and for his patients throughout the past year. After a lengthy conversation Nick asked me, “have you ever heard of Ideal Protein?”
Here’s where it gets weird. One of my work colleagues had just started the program himself that very day and told me all about it. This had to be more than a simple coincidence. I had never heard of the program until that day, and here it was popping up on my radar twice. This is a smart guy who I happen to trust, so if he would choose it for himself as a way to lose weight, then I thought it must be worth considering. Nick set up a meeting with his pal for the following month to learn more.
The month passed, and I watched my colleague successfully start to slim down. The day of the meeting arrived. I was planning on disappearing and finding a way to entertain myself while the 2 chiropractors talked shop. I watched Nick’s friend pull up to our house, and in an instant it hit me.
Still processing my thoughts, I slowly turned to Nick and said, “how are you gonna find the time to implement this in your busy practice?”
His response: “I have no idea!”
“Maybe I could do it?”
And that was that.
This opportunity was being dangled in front of my face for an entire month and while it took that long for me to notice it, in that moment it had dawned on me that quickly. So instead of getting out of their way, I joined their meeting.
The weight loss industry is a crazy industry, and we entered into this meeting a bit unsure and maybe even skeptical, fearing it could potentially be a gimmicky business. (Not my style, by the way.) We even worried it might be a multi-level marketing business. (Also not my style.) But by the end, we were convinced that this weight loss program worked and was a business model we liked. The philosophy and physiology behind it fit in with our values and beliefs, so it was a go.
That moment was the beginning of the end… finally!
It’s funny. All that time this opportunity was right under my nose, and I didn’t even see it. I don’t know what sparked me to consider it at that moment, but I’m just lucky that something did.
I can’t help but wonder… as much as we always hope opportunities will find us, are we always ready and able to see them when they do?
