Do you ever take road trips anymore?
The last road trip I took was in dental school– that’s over 20 years ago! It made sense at the time. We had an extended break and very little money to pay for travel.
Based on the time commitment and the lack of comfort, I thought they were a thing of my past. But a few months ago, the road trip came back on my radar. My mom moved into a smaller house, and she had some goodies that she wanted to share with me. It wasn’t enough stuff to pay for a mover, but it was too much to put on a plane. Plus, a lot of it was fragile, and we wanted to make sure it arrived in one piece.
So my husband and I bought a one-way ticket from Denver to Vegas and planned to rent a car to drive home with our bounty.
As I was searching my typical sites for great car rental deals, I couldn’t help but notice that darn one-way rental fee. It’s an extra fee they charge for dropping off a rental car at a different location. For a 3-day rental, the lowest I could find was $500 for a mid-grade SUV from a not-so-great rental company.
That was when I reached out to Roger, my Miles Mentor, to show me what to do.
And Roger delivered.
We were able to rent this beautiful BMW Hybrid for only $329.64.
You might be wondering how?
I got Hertz President’s Club status and used it to choose any car we wanted. With President’s Club, you can book any car and then walk right into the lot and drive off with any car you want. They have an entire section with luxury cars that you can choose from.
This freedom may have gotten us in a little bit of trouble because when we saw the car options, we decided to change our plan.
We originally wanted an SUV for the ease of transporting as many boxes as we could, but when we saw BMW’s and Tesla’s, we became lured into the luxury. We rationalized that with a 12-hour drive ahead of us, we wanted to be comfortable and enjoy the experience. So, we compromised and decided it would be okay if we couldn’t fit everything in the car.
That’s what we did! We packed the car as much as we could, and that was all we were bringing back!
The drive from Vegas to Denver is one of the most beautiful drives ever, and driving this car was so much fun. What is normally a long day and feels like a slog, became a really fun experience. I enjoyed it so much, that I would consider voluntarily planning a similar trip in my future with one caveat… it would have to be a luxury roadtrip.
If you often feel stressed or bored and want more fun, experiences like these help you enrich your life. You don’t have to earn a massive dentist income to afford a luxury road trip. You just need to know all the right strategies.
This was all made possible by having the right credit cards in place and the right status. If you want to learn how you can get the same caliber of great travel deals, Roger can become your Miles Mentor too.
